Untimely Birthday for a Timeless Toy

To celebrate LEGO's 50th birthday, which happened in January 2008, I thought I would do a post about the tiny colorful building blocks of joy.  I know I am a little late but shut up.  I usually totally forget peoples' birthdays, so quit bitching LEGO!  You've become pretty damn demanding and some what of a diva ever since they gave you the title of, "Toy of the Century."  I'm about ready to deport your ass back to Sweden.  Hope you enjoy beautiful women, awful food, safe cars and endless sunlight!

I'm just kidding LEGO.  I could never hate you.  I remember building miniature cities in my friends' basements out of you and then promptly acting like Bradzilla and smashing the tiny worlds into rubble.  I also remember how some of you would get stuck together so tightly that I would have to pry you apart with my teeth.  Sometimes, as the pieces separated one of them would pop right to the back of my throat and disappear down my esophagus. This lead to many panic filled conversations with my mom that went like this.

Me:  MOM! MOM! MOM!

Mom:  (Ironing watching Oprah)

ME: MOOOOOOOOM!

Mom:  What?

Me: I swallowed a LEGO.

Mom: Again! What size was it?

Me: It was a 2 by 2!

Mom: Stop being such a pussy!  I told you not to bother me unless you swallowed a 2 by 6 or bigger.

Me: Yeah! Back to Bradzilla!

The Art of the Brick

Nathan Sawaya
is the most well known LEGO Artist and is said to have the largest collection of bricks.  Here are some of his works.

Here is Nathan standing behind one of his works titled, Gray.

You guessed it!  This one is called, Red.

He also does portraits.  Here is one of Curious George.  If you are "curious" about what else he has done CLICK HERE.  How was that for a segway?

Death Star

Here is a pretty popular youtube clip where someone has made a stop animation to an Eddie Izzard stand-up routine.

Simple and Hilarious

Here is a link to a NY Times Blog.  It is simple yet out of the box humor using LEGOs and inspired by New York City.

LEGO Ball Big

Here is another pretty popular youtube clip where a group of guys take 5 million LEGOs and turn it into a massive ball. The they reenact a scene from Indian Jones and roll it down a hill.

Was it real?  Here is a clip from the show Mythbusters. They try and prove the clips authenticity.  (The video is kinda long, so if you just want to see what happens when they roll it, go ahead and fast forward to the 3:00 mark.)
